Hunting Spiders Down Under -- An Expedition to Australia
Some people can’t get enough of spiders. They’re called arachnologists, and they’re never happier than when crawling across a patch of dirt in hot pursuit of the spider of the moment. Australia is a favored destination, because it may have three times as many spider species as the U.S.A., and because so little is known about them. As many as eighty percent of Australian spiders are new to science, (as compared to north temperate zones, where most of the spider species have already been described).
In Pursuit of Ground Spiders In November, 1998 (spring in the Southern Hemisphere, four arachnologists bounced across a thousand miles of the deserts and beaches of Western Australia. The team consisted of Vladimir Ovtsharenko and Kefyn Catley, of the American Museum of Natural History and two colleagues from the Western Australian Museum.
