"Worldwide, Many Species Are in Real Trouble." Those words from Donald Bruning, chairman and curator, Department of Ornithology, Wildlife Conservation Society, are echoed by conservationists around the world. In the United States, the Xerces Blue butterfly has vanished. Britain alone has lost over a quarter of its butterfly species in the present century, and many other countries have suffered significant losses. The major cause is the degradation and destruction of butterfly habitat as a result of human activity. Most of the world's butterflies, and certainly its largest and most beautiful species, are found in tropical rain forests, which are disappearing at an alarming rate.
