A June, 1988 Map of Rondônia, Brazil This is a Landsat Thematic Mapper Color Composite Image, a close-up of a clearing in the forest. The area identified as isolated forest is about forty-five square kilometers. Areas of tropical forest, deforestation, regrowth and isolated forest are labeled. Dense forest appears dark red, and deforested areas as white or light blue.
This image shows many roads going deep into the forest, sectioning off small rectangles of agricultural land. These "fingers" maximize accessible forest edge. The edges are ecologically very different from intact forest: temperature rises, and the species composition changes dramatically, leading to extinction for some.
