How Can the Risks be Reduced?

Reducing the spread of infectious disease will require a number of global initiatives, to:
* Reduce human population growth.
* Preserve intact habitats, to prevent further degradation and loss of species.
* Plan new development, such as irrigation and transportation systems, in a way that anticipates and minimizes environmental disruption.
* Educate the public and the medical community about ecology and the crucial importance of preserving biodiversity.
* Coordinate early-warning networks to target areas at risk, so prevention and treatment measures can be put into effect before outbreaks occur.
